Journalists' Training on Illicit Financial Flows in Uganda
Posted on: 2023-07-13 00:00:00
ACODE in collaboration with Global Financial Integrity (GFI) has organised a training for journalists on illicit financial flows (IFFs) in Uganda. The objectives of the training are twofold: to provide an opportunity for the journalists to deepen their understanding of illicit financial flows, how it manifests in the Ugandan context, and its impact on the country’s domestic revenue mobilization efforts; and to appreciate the role of journalists in mitigating illicit financial flows and related financial and trade malpractices.
Illicit Financial Flows have been recognized as a key challenge to the global development agenda. IFFs drain resources from countries that would finance development. In Uganda, IFFs are part of a larger political economy dynamic in which economic growth and development are impeded by corruption and impunity. According to a 2018 report by GFI, Uganda has for decades been losing revenue through IFFs. It is estimated that Uganda loses more than Shs.2 trillion annually to IFFs.
