ACODE Spearheads Initiative to Empower Women, Redefine Gender Equality in Uganda
Posted on: 2024-03-12 09:51:18
Stakeholders from across Uganda on Wednesday convened in Kampala for a momentous gathering aimed at addressing the critical issues of Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) and Unpaid Care Work. The event signaled a bold stride towards enhancing gender equality and fostering women’s empowerment on a national scale.
Led by Dr. Arthur Bainomugisha, our Executive Director, the workshop served as a platform for comprehensive discussions and strategic planning. Dr. Bainomugisha emphasized the paramount importance of effective policy solutions and interventions in catalyzing tangible progress in the realm of gender equality. Central to the initiative is the commitment to strengthening the capacity of key WEE policy actors and champions through targeted training sessions in gender analysis and advocacy.
A key focus of the discussions revolved around the disproportionate burden borne by women in unpaid care work. Recognizing the invaluable contribution of women to household and community well-being, stakeholders underscored the need to rectify inequalities in resource access and opportunities.
The landmark event marked the inception of a meticulously planned project aimed at strengthening capacity for effective women economic empowerment (WEE) and care work interventions in Uganda. The project is designed to support national policy processes and actions, including research uptake by policymakers, to enhance WEE and tackle unpaid care work in Uganda. The Project is expected to increase the effectiveness of WEE and care work policies and programmes by 2025; improve the design of the early childhood development policy; and support the implementation of the National Gender Policy and the Family Policy.
The 18-month collaborative project implemented by a consortium comprising ACODE and Oxfam in Uganda is anchored on a wider spectrum of the Growth and Equal Opportunities for Women (GrOW) East Africa Initiative of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) to spur gender transformation through advancing gender equality in the world of work with a focus on gender segregation, unpaid care, and women’s collective agency.
