USAID/UGANDA - Strengthening Supply Chain Systems Activity

Updated on: 2023-09-13 09:30:38

The overall goal is to reduce stock-outs of essential medicines and health supplies in Uganda, and accelerate Uganda's journey to self-reliance by reducing dependence on external support to health supply chain management.

The Strengthening Supply Chain Systems (SSCS) Activity is a 5-year (2020-2025) project funded by USAID to support Uganda's efforts to strengthen its health supply chain to increase availability and access to safe, quality-assured medicines and health supplies in public and private-not-profit health facilities. Accelerating Uganda's journey to self-reliance, the Project will strengthen Uganda's health system to more effectively combat infectious and non-communicable diseases and improve health services and outcomes for all Ugandan families and communities.

The Project is jointly implemented by Management Sciences for Health (MSH) as a leading organization with ACODE and Uganda Healthcare Federation (UHF) as partners. It is envisaged that ACODE and UHF will gradually take on increased technical and management responsibilities as part of a deliberate strategy to promote local ownership and sustainability.

The SSCS Activity builds upon nearly two decades of MSH's partnership with USAID and the Government of Uganda in strengthening the country's pharmaceutical sector. Under SSCS, MSH will help Uganda improve the performance of key actors throughout the supply chain; advance transparent governance and effective, data-informed policies and regulations; and strengthen local capacity to promote self-reliance in managing a world-class supply chain. The SSCS Activity will also provide technical assistance to all US government partners - USAID, Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Department of Defence (DOD) - operating at the subnational level and help to improve the capacity of central-level institutions and district-based entities including Regional Referral Hospitals, District Health Offices, Health facilities, and medical stores.

The SSCS key strategies include: Improving the performance of key actors throughout the supply chain; advancing transparent governance and effective, data-informed policies and regulations; and strengthening local capacity to promote self-reliance in managing a world-class supply chain.
