Illicit Financial Flows in Uganda

The Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment (ACODE) with Global Financial Integrity (GFI) in partnership with Civil Society Coalition on Oil and Gas (CSCO) hosted a discussion about Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs) in Uganda on 24th Febuary,2021. The discussion focused on IFFs risks in petroleum sector and the connection between IFFs and beneficial ownership, gender equality, environmental justice and human rights.

From this engagement, it was revealed that often financial innovations and IFFs schemes develop faster than regulation leaving governments to play catch-up in regulating financial activities. Uganda being party to more than ten skewed Double Taxation Agreements with countries in tax haven category is a serious risk, yet as noted by the country's financial intelligence agency, there is inadequate information on beneficial ownership - a tool for financial transparency and anti-money laundering - to confront IFFs.

ACODE Signs Partnership Agreement with Columbia University Press

ACODE has signed a partnership agreement with Columbia Univrsity Press to include its research publications onto the Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO). Columbia University's CIAO is a full-text online database of mostly agreegated content, encompassing think tank reports, journal articles, departmental papers and e-books in the fiel of international affairs. CIAO subscribers include most colleges and universities in the United States, many overseas institutions of higher education, government agencies, NGOs and policy institutes. With this partnership, ACODE's published materials will be discoverable to thousands of users through basic searches.

Ministry of Local Government and ACODE signs a Co-operation Agreement

On January 6 2020, ACODE and the Ministry of Local Government signed a co-operation agreement to jointly implement policy research, advocacy, capacity building and outreach on local governance issues in Uganda. The 5-year co-operation agreement provides a framework for cooperation between the partner institutions in implementing joint policy research, advocacy and outreach with special focus on capacity building for local government councils and other stakeholders including special orientation sessions for councilors and council leaders.
