Introducing the Ninth Issue of the CBEG Economic Briefer

Dr. Arthur Bainomugisha, Executive Director | @ACODE_Uganda

Greetings from the Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment (ACODE) and welcome to the ninth Issue of our Economic Briefer! This Issue of the Briefer comes at a time when most of the world is under lockdown due to covid-19. Nonetheless, it is my great pleasure to present to you our ninth issue of our Economic Briefer that addresses the contemporary challenge of the century - the socioeconomic effect of covid-19 (If you missed Issue 8, find it here).

The theme for the ninth issue is mitigating the economic effects of civd-19. Since the turn of the year, the world has been dealing with a pandemic which slowly morphing into an economic recession. In the short term (in the next 6–12 months), the global economy is projected to contract because of the temporary halt to most economic activity (such as import and export) and mobility of both goods and labour. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has revised down the global growth projection from 2.9% to about 2.4%. Africa is projected to have lost an estimated USD 29 Billion in GDP in the first quarter of 2020 due to covid-19. However, covid-19 is likely to have some long-term effects which will affect different countries disproportionally. The exact nature of these long term effects will depend on how the global economy bounces back. It is for this reason that we’re addressing how African economies can cope.

In this Issue, we present a leading article from Dr. Enock Nyorekwa, a Senior Economist at the SDG Centre for Africa based in Kigali – Rwanda. Dr. Nyorekwa’s article addresses the effects of the covid-19 pandemic on the African continent and what countries must do to cope. We have also carried an article from Mr. Jason Braganza a Kenyan Economist based in the United Kingdom addressing the economic impact of covid-19 on Kenya and what measures the country needs to take. We also have an article from Mr. Emmanuel Keith Kisaame – a Research Fellow at ACODE that is examining the key considerations that Uganda’s budget for fiscal year 2020/21 needs to take into account to provide a stimulus to the economy. We’ve also presented some highlights from our recent research and policy engagements to inform further research and policy around the world.

Finally, we invite your feedback to help us know how useful the Briefer is to your work and how we can improve it.
