Introducing the Seventh Issue of the CBEG Economic Briefer
Dr. Arthur Bainomugisha, Executive Director | @ACODE_Uganda
Warm greetings from the Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment (ACODE)! It is with great pleasure that I introduce to you our seventh issue of the CBEG Economic Briefer; for the period August – October 2019. The Briefer provides alternative policy ideas on contemporary economic issues in Uganda, as well as the East and Southern Africa sub-regions on a quarterly basis (click here to read the previous issue).
The seventh issue focuses on industrialisation and job creation in the East African Community (EAC) with lessons for other developing countries. The theme is informed by the policy thrust of the EAC budgets in the Fiscal Year 2019/20, where regional countriesplaced emphasis on industrialisation and job creation. Given Africa’s bulging youthful population (average age of 19 years), job creation must take centre stage in the development discourse. Uganda for instance has an estimated 600,000 new entrants into the job market annually, but many of them cannot find jobs.
In this seventh Issue, we present a leading article from Dr. Enock Nyorekwa, a Senior Economist at the SDG Centre for Africa based in Kigali-Rwanda. The thrust of Dr. Nyorekwa’s article is that increased labour productivity is essential for Africa's economic growth. In addition, the Briefer carries an article from Anne Gitonga-Karuoro, Adan G. Shibia and Dr. Moses Njenga all Senior Policy Analysts at the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA) that assesses industrialisation and job creation in Kenya – East Africa’s largest economy. The briefer also publishes an article from Dr. Susan Kavuma, a Research Associate with ACODE which examines the critical issues that Uganda must address to effectively industrialise. Finally, the briefer provides links to some of our latest research publications from our Centre for Budget and Economic Governance.
It is my considered opinion that this issue of the Economic Briefer has provided alternative policy ideas that can inform industrialisation and job creation, necessary for the socio-economic transformation of Africa.
Finally, we invite your feedback to help us know how useful the Briefer is to your work and how we can improve it [ Leave a comment] Please note that while ACODE is the publisher of this briefer, the views expressed herein are strictly for the authors.
